EXCLUSIVE: Joey Fatone Launches Solo Music Career Amidst Movies, 'Dancing'

He’s flying from coast to coast – filming a new movie, “Inkubus” in the east, appearing on “Dancing with the Stars” out west. He just welcomed a second child in to his life. This summer he is preparing for a two week run of “The Producers” in Pittsburgh – on top of countless other appearances and hosting commitments.

Yet somewhere in between all of this, Joey Fatone is finding the time to go back to his roots and launch a solo music career. “Radio” is his first single, and the evening before it hit iTunes, the former ‘N Sync member somehow spared 10 minutes to check in to “The Ralphie Radio Show.”

“It’s been a crazy month of May for me,” Fatone said, arguably a rather large understatement. “It’s been unreal, and I count my blessings every day.”

‘N Sync released its debut, self-titled album 12 years ago. From 1998 to 2003, the group sold 56 million albums worldwide – a number that sounds and reads unfathomable in this day and age. After the boy band disbanded – Justin Timberlake and J.C. Chasez pursued separate music careers. Lance Bass unsuccessfully attempted to launch in to space, before revealing he was gay in 2006. Chris Kirkpatrick hosted a morning radio show and appeared in a couple reality TV programs.

And if you were looking for Fatone, you didn’t need to look any further than the closest screen or stage – because the baritone singer decided he’d pursue everything that didn’t involve recording an album and touring.

“I did ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’, and then I went off and did Broadway for a while,” noted Fatone, who appeared in “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Rent.” “And then I was spending time with my wife and my kid, and then I just finally had another kid recently.”

Fatone cites the birth of his second daughter as the reason he backed out of the spotlight – focusing on his family after “Dancing with the Stars” and his various hosting credits, which include the TV Guide Network. Now he’s back on the road – wrapping up his current film, a horror flick in which he stars alongside Robert Englund – the original Freddy Krueger, before the end of the month. Despite the constant activity in his life, Fatone believes the timing is right to return to music.

Part 1: New movie, Return to "Dancing with the Stars"

Part 2: Solo album plans, possible Justin collab, "The Producers" in Pittsburgh

---
“To have all the guys from ‘N Sync come out with an album at the same time, and just where I was, for me to do more Broadway and obviously not come out with an album, I think for me I’m glad it was kinda that way,” revealed Fatone. “You know, you don’t want people to get bombarded and go, ‘Oh look, Justin’s coming out with an album, oh here’s J.C. coming out with an album, here’s Joey coming out with an album, who’s coming out with an album next?’”

So he waited, and eventually recorded a handful of songs over the past couple years – fine-tuning his work until he was satisfied.

“I’m not the biggest writer, Justin and J.C. were really, really great writers… I’d always come up with concepts but never was a writer for that,” he recalled. “I always wanted to, and over the years developed writing and coming up with more ideas and working with a friend of mine, Rob Giles, who wrote ‘Radio’, it just kind of came together.”

Somehow Fatone fit in writing and recording sessions between his litany of other gigs. He’s only worked with Giles in studio thus far, but plans on reaching out this summer to other potential collaborators, including Timberlake. Fatone agreed with my assessment that Justin is more interested in partnering with other artists at the moment than recording his own material, so now may be the time to snag him for a feature.

“I think right now, because he doesn’t want the pressure on himself to have to go on tour and all that stuff,” said Fatone, who mentioned that he already spoke with Timberlake regarding the possibility. “So I think for him, producing and writing with other people is a great outlet for him, and he can stay at home.”

Certainly much has changed, besides the decline in sales, since ‘N Sync ruled the charts. But Fatone has taken note and adapted. He did not commit to any type of music video for “Radio” until he sees the reaction from fans – which these days, is instant thanks to comments and stat reports from iTunes, Amazon MP3, and YouTube.

“It’s like, why not put it out there, see what happens, and if it starts to grow… for me I’d love to do a tour and go out to maybe like, a House of Blues and do a tour like that,” said Fatone, also mentioning that he’d like to keep that intimate setting for his fans.

“My whole thing is, life’s too short, enjoy what you have, enjoy the music, enjoy spending time with your family, and that’s my vibe in general. I’m not trying to save the world by writing a song that’s going to make everyone hold hands and be one together. No, just have a party, have a good time.”

EXCLUSIVE: Justin Bieber, Your Typical 15 Year Old... Almost

From the outset, Justin Bieber seems like your typical 15 year-old. He doodles on his own photos, cracks jokes with band mates, and will at times refuse to listen to anyone older than him. Getting ready to walk on stage at The Mall at Steamtown, he hops on his record label rep’s back, only to crash his head in to a door sill. Leaving the mall, in an attempt to retrieve his fallen hat, his ankle is stepped on by a fan, but of course, he tries not to let on to his staff, which laughs at him as he hobbles around, that its bothering him.

But a quick look at what the Canadian-born heart throb accomplished this past year, and “typical” will quickly become the furthest adjective from your mind.

Bieber performed last Thursday exclusively for 97 BHT listeners inside The Mall at Steamtown. Usher signed the teenage crooner to a deal after watching some of his YouTube videos – the most famous being Bieber’s cover of Chris Brown’s “With You”. But Usher wasn’t the only A-lister trying to court the 15 year-old.

“Well, what happened was, it was in Las Vegas. And it was Justin Timberlake in the red corner, it was Usher in the blue corner, and I’m pretty sure it was a technical knockout,” joked Bieber before he performed for almost 1,200 people inside the mall. I asked if Usher offered that much more than Timberlake, to which Bieber replied, “No, uhm… it was a technical knockout.”

---
Now with the upcoming release of his debut LP, My World, Bieber sports an enthusiastic fan base throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as two hits charted in the Top 30. Just a few weeks ago he popped up on NBC’s “The Today Show”, and who could forget his cameo at the MTV Video Music Awards? Yes, the 15 year-old had the daunting task of introducing Taylor Swift’s performance, immediately after KanYe West interrupted the starlet’s acceptance speech on stage. Bieber witnessed the fiasco from the stage, and then went on to offer impromptu kudos to Swift on-air, before introducing her.

“I don’t think as a new artist, or anybody, really goes off topic of like, what they’re supposed to say on the teleprompter,” Bieber noted. “I kinda took a risk… having to introduce Taylor Swift on top of that was kinda scary, but I mean, she’s amazing. She’s a really nice girl so, I was honored to be able to introduce her.”

Bieber was also honored to take part in Kidd Kraddick In The Morning’s “Band Camp.” For a week straight, the singer joined the morning show to help a group of kids form a band. Bieber notes that he enjoyed the experience, but in typical 15 year-old fashion, did have one complaint.

“The only crappy part was I had to wake up at like 5 in the morning, every single day,” Bieber said. He uses his iPhone as an alarm – and also as a way to connect with his fans. The same day he performed at the mall, uStream, a web site that allows for live web video chatting, sent Bieber an iPhone application that allows him to stream live video to the web site.

“I just got it today,” Bieber said, still kinda taken aback that uStream would send him the app before it makes it available to the general public. “But like, it’s cool that I can uStream from my phone.”

Bieber will then send the uStream link out to his Twitter followers, all 300,000 plus.

“I don’t know why (I have that many followers),” he joked. “I’m not that cool.”

RALPHIE REWIND: New Guilty Pleasure

Download the mp3

My new guilty pleasure? The Justin Timberlake-produced reality game show "The Phone" on MTV. I've watched it the past two Sunday evenings, and although I'm usually not a fan of MTV "reality" shows - the various dynamics of this program intrigue me. Of course, the fast-paced nature of the show lends to the excitement, but I also think the team work/trust aspect of the show adds to it - along with the final challenge for the eventual winner - keep the $50,000, or split it with your teammate?

EXCLUSIVE: what you CAN'T ask t-pain...

it seems as if t-pain took a cue from his label-mate and now record-mate justin timberlake in the pre-handling of media interviews. i received this list of what could and couldn't be asked to t-pizzle, as per his management via jive/zomba records...

(pain and i in '05).
"Please let interviewers know that Pain will only be discussing his album release on 11/11 and any other topics surrounding what he is currently doing. He will only answer one question on Wayne and upcoming projects they have. No questions on picking favorite artists, who he would like to work with or any other kind of lists."

i actually like the last sentence - because those types of questions are corny, cliche, and over-asked. but otherwise, pain needs to hop off the high horse and back on the vocoder, pronto tonto.

EXCLUSIVE: justin timberlake c&d...

i love lawyers and their inappropriate use of "irreperable injury."

justin to host oscars?

whoppi... steve martin... billy crystal... justin timberlake?

which one of these things doesn't belong? i like justin, but i don't think this is such a hot move. the rumor is here.

6.10.2008

my interview w/ justin would've been different...

and way more intriguing. but this is still amazing in a weird, awkward kinda fashion...

i'm sure justin did a million interviews in that dark room previous to this one, but can hollywood makeup artists not make someone look less tired?

i am in favor for super bowl monday.

don't get me wrong, i didn't party too hard last night. i've drank and eaten much more during and after yankees victories (11 days til pitchers and catchers report!). still, it's the super bowl. and for the first time in three years, i didn't have to work through it.

why wouldn't i take full advantage of this situation?

marino and i headed inside the woodlands. besides the giants fans among us, there were the infamous buffalo bites, dj godfather's homemade (and free) pizza, and of course, dollar drinks from 7-9.

furthermore (and maybe the best part of the entire deal) - no mess to clean up afterwards.

so we cheered and jeered as the giants and patriots battled, and laughed in between at some of the commercials, all of which can be viewed here.

a few of my personal favorites can be viewed below...
Justin Timberlake's PEPSI Superbowl Commercial

Diet Pepsi Max Super Bowl Ad: Wake Up People Ginseng & Caffeine

Doritos Super Bowl Commercial: Giant Mouse Trap

Gatorade G2 Super Bowl Commercial: Derek Jeter

for the most part, this year's super bowl commercials were entertaining.

although, for everyone sitting in the streamside, we only needed to see this to make our nights...

and with that, a great start to new england's sports year. now, on to the point of this post.

go here, and sign the petition. who wouldn't be in favor of a national holiday the day after the super bowl?

disappointing...

i am a diehard yankees fan, and while in studio last night, throughly enjoyed watching derek jeter squeak out a game-winning hit for the my bronx bombers.

but apparently, clutch-hits isn't the only thing the yankee captain distributes.

(l to r: minillo, jeter, biel)

according to laragmag.com - derek jeter gave jessica alba herpes.

(alba: this month's cosmo cover girl)
still undecided on who i feel bad for.

anywho - jeter is known as "serial celebrity dater." mariah carey, vanessa minillo, jessica biel, maybe now gabrielle union.

and i'm sure that is just scratching the surface.

but think of the ramifactions. justin timberlake and nick lachey - you may be infected too.

could you imagine - derek jeter goes from endorsing nike and ford to valtrex?

...the nominees are.

mtv announced the nominees for the 2007 vma's during trl today. justin and beyonce lead the pack with seven nods a piece.

you can vote for your favorite new artist here.

the vma's air sunday, sept. 9th at 9 from the palms casino in vegas.

my mtvizzle source tells me that the red carpet the celebs walk will run through the casino gaming floor. the people at the palms literally have to rearrange slot machines and card tables for all of this to happen. should be pretty bad-ass.

just as BA will be the fantasy suite parties hosted by big names and broadcasted from during the show. e! reports that justin timberlake and vma DJ and producer timbaland will be co-hosting one of these.

of course, all week we qualify you to see the vma-nominated beyonce friday night in philly!
