me and katy perry, sittin' on a tour bus...
---
It’s not easy being Katy Perry.
The “I Kissed a Girl” singer is currently on the Vans Warped Tour, which arrived at Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain last Sunday. Conveniently enough, her boyfriend, Gym Class Heroes front-man Travis McCoy, also performs on the tour. Her infectious summer jam just registered its fifth consecutive week atop the charts. Perry’s backers include Internet giants like MySpace and Perez Hilton. Her LP, One Of The Boys, sold 115,000 copies in a mere three weeks, powered mostly by the strength of her aforementioned hit.
But, as Ben Parker told his nephew Peter in Spiderman, “With great power comes great responsibility.”
“I’m on Warped Tour, we’re six weeks in, and I’m not dead,” a relieved Perry told me on her tour bus.
After nagging her manager throughout the day, I received an invitation to jump on board and speak with Katy for a minute. Dressed in an oversized white shirt and pajama pants, Perry gently sipped green tea in an attempt to recoup her voice and energy level. While most artists on the tour would bus it to the next stop – Perry’s next stop was a top-notch hotel in Manhattan and an appearance on ABC’s The View.
“Fuck! I’m meeting Barbara Walters tomorrow. Hi mom!” Perry exclaimed in a sudden burst of revelation that maybe she has in fact “made it” – to a degree. Minutes before, Katy wouldn’t acknowledge her success as much, simply insisting that while she’s had fun, she’s also made her fair share of sacrifices.
Now those sacrifices are yielding dividends, although life isn’t all celebrity encounters and rock shows. Perry and her manager both explained their dilemma in Sunday alone: With Perry’s throat feeling a little under the weather, she cancelled a MySpace acoustic performance in order to perform the Warped Tour set and save her voice for the following day’s TV appearance. All this happens within the current demands of Perry’s schedule – one that awakes the singer as early as 7 a.m. daily for hair and makeup, followed by photo shoots (MySpace and Rolling Stone occurred within days of her arrival in Scranton), interviews, and performances.
Yet, despite all this, Perry still made time for a staple Warped Tour tradition – stopping by her merchandise table to sign autographs for over 100 people.
“I think I definitely (have) been given a great opportunity, and people seem to be really responding,” said Perry. “I worked really hard, and I continue to work really hard.”
No one knows Perry’s staying power. But one-hit wonder or not, it’s evident that the singer work ethic will be unscathed, possibly taking a cue from both her parents, who were traveling ministers, and her beau, who helped GCH launch from a small town in Central New York to international success.
McCoy and Perry began dating a few years ago. Both openly talk about the relationship – those who walked in by the busses in the VIP parking area to the stages were even treated to a quick PDA by the couple as Perry returned from her autograph session.
“We’re on the same plane,” Perry gushed. The singer of “Cupid’s Chokehold” is feeling the clutch as well.“It’s a beautiful situation,” McCoy told me, his younger brother within earshot. “Honestly, not to sound cheesy; I just don’t think I’ve ever been this in love with someone before.”

joe bros giveaway inside the mall at steamtown
thank you thank you thank you.
as a teenager growing up in niagara falls, i constantly dragged parents and friends to concerts and autograph signings. from toronto to rochester, i left no stone unturned. a wwe wrestler in canada? there. buffalo sabres flying in to the niagara falls airport at 2a? c'mon dad, time to go.
furthermore, i lived with a younger sister that experienced the rise of boy bands. so i watched as she called radio stations frantically attempting to score backstage passes, while eventually offering a little help when i could, now that i'm surrounded by the access.
i'm sure as a parent or guardian, aunt or cousin, nothing pleasures you more than to see your beloved child happy. and whether "happy" means meeting the jonas brothers or simply attending the show on the lawn, you're willing to go to almost any parameter to make it happen.
at bht, and as someone who experienced this personally, it's understood that this isn't an easy task. to some extent, i can imagine what the past few weeks have been like. moments of hope, moments of failure - times when you smiled, and others when you wanted to cry.
all we ask is that at the end of the day, you put things in to perspective - realize what matters most in life - and understand that there's only so much bht, or for that matter, any entity can do - and trust me, we did everything in our powers to make sure the most amount of people could enjoy tonight's jonas brothers show. plus, we were sure to act in a fair and understanding manner throughout.
thank you for listening, and reading - and please - enjoy the show.

McCain in the rain...
The senator finished up his town hall around 11:15, standing on stage for about an hour. He arrived on Franklin aboard "The Straight Talk Express" bus at 12:20.
Next up - a drive to Allentown and a flight to New Orleans.
You really don't know what covering a candidate is like until you actually do it. Press secretaries, secret service, inclimate weather, local & national press unequally sharing unmarked territories... a stressful hot mess if you ask me.
update from the mccain townhall...
doors opened to the public at 8a, and this place isn't near full. very surprising, and i'm sure disappointing for the mccain camp.
live from mccain's meeting at the kirby...
lots to catch you up on - but let's get to today's big story in the area - the arrival of senator john mccain to nepa. i'm currently typing on my laptop in the f.m. kirby center over the "johnmccain1" wireless network. things haven't gone exactly as planned, truth be told, never does.
in today's instance, the press were informed that load-in would be in between 6-7a, with a secret service sweep of the building happening at 7. no cameras or equipment allowed after the sweep begins.
i arrive at 6:30, and to the chagrin of myself and a few other press, the sweep "began early." however, a mccain staffer informs us that the press will receive preferential treatment when doors open at 8, no line, and equipment will be allowed.
i burned an hour outside, walked through just before 8, and am now sitting on the third of four levels on this riser. the only national media i've noticed is hbo - which has two camerapeople filming a documentary on the election.
lots of material on the way, in the forms of writing, pictures, audio, and video - with bhtizzle's new video camera! let's hope the final product warrents the exclamation point.
afterall, nothing happens as planned - sen. mccain's 11:45 press avail, where he would have spoken to the media exclusively, is already cancelled.
