EXCLUSIVE: Ke$ha - The Father-Less Pop Star With A Not-So-Soft Side
Her family and friends know her as Kesha Rose Sebert - a trash-talking, hard-partying aspiring artist, who is finally breaking out on the grandest stage of 'em all.
And as for Ke$ha, seems she knows who she is, and what she's doing - but as for who her father is? Well, that’s another story.
“This guy called me up, and said, ‘I think I’m your dad,” explained Ke$ha. “So like, I moved to (Los Angeles), and off-the-plane moved in with him. And turned out he’s totally not my dad, and so I lived in my car for a minute… and then, I ended up getting my own apartment.”
Believe it or not, that’s one of Sebert’s more tame stories… her official website’s bio starts with an account of the pop star’s face-to-face meeting with an icon. Ke$ha paid off a gardner and snuck in to Prince’s house to give him a demo. Sebert met The Purple One, and she left the CD there for him, but she never heard back.
It seems Sebert loves to tell stories – and tales she tells on her debut LP, Animal, which hit stores Tuesday. The following day, before taping a performance on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” – the 22 year-old singer/rapper/story teller called in to “The Ralphie Radio Show.”
It’s a true Hollywood tale: the girl who lived in her car, and still doesn’t know the identity of her father, goes on to help sell the two most downloaded singles in a sole week. Of course, you probably didn’t know Ke$ha sang the hook of “Right Round” because she didn’t receive credit for the single. It was her decision to not be credited and not appear in the music video. Matter of fact, Sebert says at first she didn’t receive much of anything for the performance.

Part 2: Animal, "Right Round", Katy Perry's Engagement

“I didn’t get shit,” Ke$ha said, rather calmly, noting that in addition to no up-front payment, the track did not yield her any royalty checks. “I got a car,” she later admitted when pressed about whether the song could be credited with landing her a deal on RCA Records. The 1978 Gold Trans-Am that she currently drives can also be seen in the video for “TiK ToK.”
You can say what you’d like about the type of music, or the context of it – but Ke$ha insists the songs are sincere and “unapologetically fun.”
“The music is honest,” she clarifies. “I write with sheer honesty, so anything that’s in any of my songs, like, chances are I’ve probably done that at some point. I’m not saying like, I do these things every day.”
“Unapologetically fun” is kinda a term you could use to describe another track… Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl.” Perry and Sebert are friends – and Ke$ha made a cameo in the video for Perry’s debut single. Yet, due to all of the commotion around her own debut, Sebert did not hear that comedian Russell Brand proposed to Perry… until I told her on The RRS.
“Are you serious?!” she exclaimed, before I cited multiple reports from Brand’s publicist and the comedian himself. “Wow, no shit.”
Sebert hasn’t met Brand, but is happy for the newly engaged couple. Although, she did have to think for a second on what she would give them as a wedding gift.
“I would get her… a giant… inflatable…,” she said, thinking out loud, before I cut her off and reminded her that the censors were standing by, if need be.
“No, some sort of animal. Or I’ll buy her a boat… I dunno.”

EXCLUSIVE: Quite The Ride, Literally, For 3OH!3
The Boulder, Colorado-duo of Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte stopped at Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain for the second consecutive year. But what a difference 365 days makes. Last summer, the band played in almost complete obscurity on Vans Warped Tour – behind a lineup that included the Gym Class Heroes and Katy Perry. This time around, 3OH!3 headlines the summer jaunt, all while owning the most spun song on radio stations across the country in “Don’t Trust Me.” Now the band finds itself in a similar position as its friend Perry found herself in last year: touring the country while fulfilling media obligations across the globe.
“We just flew to London and back two days ago,” said Foreman. “On our passport, the date of entry into the U.K. is the same back into New York.”

“It was a whirlwind trip,” added Motte, who while on the plane took a picture of a glass of champagne he drank – Nat eventually sent a link to the picture out as a Twitter update.
“It’s some new stuff, I don’t even really know about it,” he commented about the bar, on the plane, which he and Sean drank at.
Coincidentally enough, 3OH!3 found themselves across the pond with Perry. Nat and Sean became good friends with the “I Kissed A Girl” singer last summer during Warped Tour. The duo supported Perry on her solo tour. Now Katy, who owns three top 10 hits in the States, will cameo on a remix of 3OH!3’s next single from their CD Want, “Starstrukk.”
“(We) made it bigger, opened up a spot for her on the song,” Nat revealed of the track. “It should be going to (radio) pretty soon here.”
With radio stations already familiar with both acts, the song will surely catch the attention of DJs and listeners alike instantly. The timing is perfect for the group as well: 3OH!3 continues radio promo while finishing up Warped Tour. But again, the path traveled can be bumpy. That proved no more true last Wednesday, when 3OH!3 found itself in a bit of a dilemma: the band’s tour bus broke down.
“We got this new one that has six bunks, and there’s nine of us, so…” Nat explained. “I ended up cuddling with our bass player last night. Waking up with some stubble against your (face) is a little weird, but it’s not altogether unpleasant.”
Considering where this band came from – the idea of band mates and a backup tour bus must be a welcome notion. Before, Nat and Sean would play themselves, now the emcees are backed by a slew of musicians.
Yet despite success, one thing hasn’t changed: the Warped Tour after parties. Nat, who also DJs, still spins at every party he is available for. After the Montage Mountain show, Warped Tour band and crew members joined in for a BBQ and Michael Jackson-themed party, with white gloves and moonwalks encouraged. While techs tore down the set up and musicians mingled with groupies, there stood Nat, quietly in the corner, seamlessly spinning the soundtrack to the late evening. You would’ve never assumed that the 6-foot-plus DJ, flanked by not even a security guard, comprised one half of the duo behind one of America’s most popular songs.

EXCLUSIVE: The Ting Tings Talk Touring, Moaning w/ Katy Perry
After The Ting Tings finished performing for 97 BHT listeners, Katie and Jules spoke with Ralphie inside the 97 BHT on-air studio about touring the states, Katy Perry, moaning with celebrities, and more...
Check out video of The Ting Tings performance here.
---
Ever wonder what musicians say to each other when they meet? The Ting Tings’ Katie White shares a little insight:
“All bands like moaning. We love to moan,” said White. “We saw Katy Perry the other day, and she moaned – and we had a good moan together.”
Perry seems to be quite the confidant to her cohorts – the songstress and Rihanna have been known to hang out. White says the two talked about “just girl stuff really,” like their hair and skin.
“She’s funny really, she makes me laugh,” said White. “If she wants to do a cartwheel on stage, she does a cartwheel on stage.”
Of course, any type of acrobatics on a stage with Katie and Jules would be near impossible, let alone dangerous, given the amount of equipment the two uses to duplicate the vast array of sounds in their music.
“No, you’d have a guitar up your ass,” Katie joked – with Jules tongue-in-cheek challenging, “I bet Katy Perry couldn’t do that.”
The Ting Tings just wrapped up an American promo tour – and will run the Europe festival scene before returning to the States in the fall in support of Pink.
“I don’t know how many U.K.’s you can get in just a California,” said the other half of the group, Jules DeMartino. “You can do a two week tour in the U.K. or even a three week tour and that’s it, you’ve covered pretty much every corner.”
White also noted that in addition to the physical aspects, the media landscape is also vastly differently in the U.S., specifically involving radio airplay.
“If you get BBC Radio 1 and 2, you’re done really,” explained White. “It really is a shame in a way as well because if they don’t like your music, it’s really hard because they’re aren’t many other stations to get played on.”
BBC Radio’s reach is vast according to White, “literally every household.” Lucky for the pop-rock duo, BBC Radio loved their music, and the rest is history.
“We’ve got a map that we carry around with us, and we circle every town or city or state we go to,” DeMartino said.
White continued, “We never know where we are but we always know where we’ve been.”
And it won’t be too hard to figure out where The Ting Tings are going. First Europe – then the States with Pink – and then to Berlin – where Katie and Jules will write, record, and throw house parties in search of new tunes for the band’s second LP.

RALPHIE REPORT: Daughtry Talks Idol, New CD

Download the mp3
Chris Daughtry calls up The Ralphie Radio Show to chat about his new single/CD, a possible tour, and this season of American Idol - and he isn't pleased with the favortism shown to Idol finalist Adam Lambert.
Read Ralphie's exclusive report on Chris's Idol criticism here.
Leave This Town drops July 14.
---
You might be able to count Chris Daughtry among those surprised that Kris Allen won American Idol last week. In a pre-taped interview on "The Ralphie Radio Show", Daughtry seemed baffled at the amount of media attention and bias directed toward Idol contestant Adam Lambert.
"I thought it was pretty incredible that all of the sudden, Adam is on the cover of a magazine. That people are wearing his name... it seems a little weird to me, because I know how strict it was when I was on the show," said Daughtry. He publicly supported Allen, although refrained from using the Idol performance stage as a venue to voice his opinion. "(Favortism) was definitely frowned upon, and now, I don't know."
A question regarding Katy Perry's outright support of Lambert, with Adam's name embroidered on her cape, elicited the comment. TMZ reported Idol producers edited out this detail when the performance posted to iTunes and the Internet.
The American Idol Season 5 alum concurred with my assessment that the media already anointed Lambert this year's winner, albeit prematurely. Although I admitted to Chris that my coverage of "Idol" is limited, I feel as if the media covered Lambert as if it assumed he already won.
"It's kind of like Adam has already been crowned the winner, and everybody's just kind of going along with that," I commented to Chris.
"That's exactly the way it feels to me too," Daughtry responded. "But yunno, it is what it is, and good luck to both of them."
The North Carolina rocker’s band just released a song to radio, “No Surprise”, with a new LP, “Leave This Town”, out on July 14.
Daughtry, who performed the new track on Idol, noted that all the finalists seemed like great people, but he could relate to Allen on a number of different levels.
“I guess he reminds me a little bit of myself where, he’s on the show – this is all new to him – he’s married… When I hear his voice, I kind of see where that goes, on the radio.”
Allen didn’t ask Daughtry for any advice, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t receive any.
“I basically told him what to be prepared for, for the next two years of his life. Be strong, and stay with your wife.”
Words of wisdom from an Idol contestant who didn’t have the luxury of on stage endorsements or an Idol crown – yet went on to drop a debut LP that sold over six million copies. Daughtry assures fans that the band didn’t deviate from its trademark sound, but did test some new sounds on the one CD – likening one track to something that would draw out glow sticks if Timbaland got a hold of it.
“We tried to branch out a little bit on this record and experiment on some different things, without totally going far left field.”
Daughtry’s band is in the planning stages of a tour that would kick off this fall, in support of the new album.

No Shame In Katy's Game
"Girls, if you have ever dated a boy – specifically the lead singer from Gym Class Heroes – don't do it! Boys should have a heart. You know what I mean girls? Boys just want the milk, but they don't want to buy the cow."
Obviously she's just a tad bitter. Pretty tacky that Katy is airing out her grievances on a concert stage, but whatev.

RALPHIE REPORT: chillin' with blg's martin...

Its just past 3 a.m. Martin Johnson spent the day traveling, meeting fans, and living the life; granted by the pop-rock quartet he fronts. Boys Like Girls caught a 6 a.m., from their hometown of Boston – and were stuck in Philadelphia for the majority of the morning due to plane issues. Upon arriving in Avoca, the four were swept up by a Columbia Records rep and driven to The Woodlands – where I awaited with the rest of the 97 BHT staff for an interview/photo-op date.
But Johnson’s finished with media and other obligations for the night. Yet despite the 9 a.m. lobby call for a flight back to Beantown, the BLG lead singer is fidgeting through his iTunes playlist. At my suggestion, a Goo Goo Dolls live LP from a 2004 concert in Buffalo, NY (my hometown) is selected. Johnson skips through a couple tracks – Martin insists he “only wants to hear the hits.”
The comment is a microcosm of the singer. Call his group what you may, and categorize his music how you will, but one thing is for certain – Johnson is true to his art. We spend most of the time discussing and dissecting not just pop rock, but radio songs, and subsequent hits.
“(I) Love ‘Crush’,” Johnson admits of the debut single from American Idol runner-up David Archuleta. “It’s just a good radio song. He’s got a great voice.”
It isn’t often that you’ll meet an artist who genuinely enjoys the work of their peers. I suppose hanging out in an artist’s hotel room after last call with a few close friends isn’t all too much of an everyday occurrence either. Nonetheless, Johnson loves pop music. He thinks the latest Katy Perry song (“Hot N Cold”) is one of the top three tracks on radio. And Johnson insists that Metro Station’s second single, “Seventeen Forever” is a better song than “Shake It” – so much that he originally suggested to MS’s manager (who also heads up Boys Like Girls) that it should be the debut single.
“Yeah, I ended up being wrong on that one. But still,” says Johnson.
Of course, Boys Like Girls scored a few hits of their own. Johnson – even at this late hour – continuously flaunts his music cognoscitive. He compares the band’s success to that of fellow pop rockers All-American Rejects.
“’Great Escape’ was our ‘Dirty Little Secret’” explains Johnson. “It allowed us to have ‘Hero/Heroine’ and ‘Thunder’ – like ‘Move Along’ and ‘It Ends Tonight.’”
All in the room nod in agreement. Like AAR, Boys Like Girls roughed it on the Vans Warped Tour – one of the many concerts hit hard this summer by rising fuel prices.
“Bands that are starting out right now, it’s going to start to literally be impossible to tour,” the singer told me earlier. “When we did a 15 passenger and a trailer, we were just surviving barely on gas – hoping we could maybe get a hotel room for six people to share.”
Not the case anymore. Funny how Martin once worked in Hollister – listening to the type of music he’s now paid to perform for millions of fans across the world.
And he doesn’t even have to take care of the gas bill.

me and katy perry, sittin' on a tour bus...
---
It’s not easy being Katy Perry.
The “I Kissed a Girl” singer is currently on the Vans Warped Tour, which arrived at Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain last Sunday. Conveniently enough, her boyfriend, Gym Class Heroes front-man Travis McCoy, also performs on the tour. Her infectious summer jam just registered its fifth consecutive week atop the charts. Perry’s backers include Internet giants like MySpace and Perez Hilton. Her LP, One Of The Boys, sold 115,000 copies in a mere three weeks, powered mostly by the strength of her aforementioned hit.
But, as Ben Parker told his nephew Peter in Spiderman, “With great power comes great responsibility.”
“I’m on Warped Tour, we’re six weeks in, and I’m not dead,” a relieved Perry told me on her tour bus.
After nagging her manager throughout the day, I received an invitation to jump on board and speak with Katy for a minute. Dressed in an oversized white shirt and pajama pants, Perry gently sipped green tea in an attempt to recoup her voice and energy level. While most artists on the tour would bus it to the next stop – Perry’s next stop was a top-notch hotel in Manhattan and an appearance on ABC’s The View.
“Fuck! I’m meeting Barbara Walters tomorrow. Hi mom!” Perry exclaimed in a sudden burst of revelation that maybe she has in fact “made it” – to a degree. Minutes before, Katy wouldn’t acknowledge her success as much, simply insisting that while she’s had fun, she’s also made her fair share of sacrifices.
Now those sacrifices are yielding dividends, although life isn’t all celebrity encounters and rock shows. Perry and her manager both explained their dilemma in Sunday alone: With Perry’s throat feeling a little under the weather, she cancelled a MySpace acoustic performance in order to perform the Warped Tour set and save her voice for the following day’s TV appearance. All this happens within the current demands of Perry’s schedule – one that awakes the singer as early as 7 a.m. daily for hair and makeup, followed by photo shoots (MySpace and Rolling Stone occurred within days of her arrival in Scranton), interviews, and performances.
Yet, despite all this, Perry still made time for a staple Warped Tour tradition – stopping by her merchandise table to sign autographs for over 100 people.
“I think I definitely (have) been given a great opportunity, and people seem to be really responding,” said Perry. “I worked really hard, and I continue to work really hard.”
No one knows Perry’s staying power. But one-hit wonder or not, it’s evident that the singer work ethic will be unscathed, possibly taking a cue from both her parents, who were traveling ministers, and her beau, who helped GCH launch from a small town in Central New York to international success.
McCoy and Perry began dating a few years ago. Both openly talk about the relationship – those who walked in by the busses in the VIP parking area to the stages were even treated to a quick PDA by the couple as Perry returned from her autograph session.
“We’re on the same plane,” Perry gushed. The singer of “Cupid’s Chokehold” is feeling the clutch as well.“It’s a beautiful situation,” McCoy told me, his younger brother within earshot. “Honestly, not to sound cheesy; I just don’t think I’ve ever been this in love with someone before.”

As Alex Rodriguez gears up to play as an all-star this weekend, he’ll do so knowing that his marriage is all-but-gone.
Cynthia Rodriguez, the New York Yankees third baseman’s wife of almost six years filed for divorce on Monday. The papers end speculation of a marriage that has been on its last life since Us Weekly broke the story about A-Rod’s latest extra-marital affairs.
It’s fitting that the highest paid player in baseball would be tied to the ultimate “Material Girl.” Doormen at Madonna’s Manhattan apartment blabbed to the media about A-Rod’s late night excursions to Madge’s pad, leaving as late as midnight.
Murmurs about the Rodriguez rocky marriage began less than a year ago, when photographers snapped A-Rod hanging out with a buxom blonde in Toronto, wining and dining her before taking in the sights at one of T-Dot’s more prominent strip clubs.
But the extensive media coverage did not faze the Bronx Bomber then. A-Rod earned MVP accolades for the third time in his career that year. Meanwhile, his wife packed up and left their New York apartment, only to join her hubby on the road, while the Yankees were in Boston playing the Red Sox.
Cynthia again packed her bags after the latest front-page scandal, but she didn’t run to her husband. Instead, Lenny Kravitz opened the doors of his Paris home to the estranged wife. Kravitz then vehemently denied rumors that he and Rodriguez’s wife were any more than friends.
The situation is surely a complicated one for all parties involved, as well as Guy Oseary. He manages Rodriguez, Madonna, and Kravitz.
Alex and Cynthia signed a pre-nuptial agreement before their November 2002 marriage. In the divorce papers, Mrs. Rodriguez claims her soon-to-be ex is worth $250,000,000. She seeks custody of their two daughters, child support, debt-relief, and their six bedroom home in Coral Gables, FL.
GYM CLASS HERO GETS DETENTION
Here’s a bit of advice for anyone thinking about checking out the Gym Class Heroes later this month. The group from Geneva, NY headlines this year’s Vans Warped Tour, which rolls through the Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain on Sunday, July 27.
Don’t yell a racial slur at GCH front man, Travis McCoy. Of course, that’s also assuming McCoy makes the date.
At a recent Warped Tour stop in St. Louis, a fan in the front row called McCoy, “an ignorant n----r.” The lead emcee tried to bring the person on stage, so he could embarrass him in front of the audience. As the fan climbed on to the stage, he hit McCoy on his knee, which apparently has a brace on it. Travie responded by smashing his microphone on the guy’s head.
St. Louis police put their own “Cupid’s Chokehold” on the Gym Class Hero, booking him on third-degree assault charges. Authorities released McCoy on $500 bail, but TMZ reports that police have issued a warrant for his arrest.
Gym Class Heroes released a statement calling the incident unfortunate. McCoy issued a half-hearted apology, claiming the kid got what he deserved for the comment. No word from Katy Perry. The “I Kissed a Girl” singer and Warped Tour-mate is dating McCoy.
